Some depressed people may go to a physician for check up and consultation. It could be more advisable if the person would see a therapist.</p>
<p>Most depression therapists are very good in finding the reason why a person became depressed. The process in which a therapist treats depression is through emotional and psychological approach. On the other hand, a doctor will recommend patients to take anti depressant medicines. There are instances that have happened where a doctor treating a patient for depression was involved in such controversies where improper medications were applied.</p>
<p>An expert for depression would classify a depressed person if he shows some symptoms of significant weight loss, increase in appetite, loss of agility, or weight gain because of excessive eating. Others who are depressed may also encounter problems in sleeping or insomnia, over sleeping, decrease of sexual interest, and the lack of interest in lifestyle activities.</p>
<p>Some indications of depression may also come in a more emotional approach like the feeling of sadness and boredom, feeling of being a useless individual, the feeling of guilt to oneself, the feeling of being undecided to some simple decisions, and the decrease of the ability of the mind to think and concentrate. The most frightening symptoms of depression may come if a person is always thinking of his death or an individual wants to commit suicide.</p>
<p>Here are some ways to deal with depression in a personal approach:</p>
<p>1. A person must force himself to go outside. Do not even bother if the climate is not that good. Try to have a walk outside, read a book, or even try to write a poem. This can be an effective idea to overcome the depression rather than staying on the room alone.</p>
<p>2. It is always better if there are people that will support the person in depression. It is recommended that a person seek for a friend or a companion while he is still in the stage of recovering depression. If the individual is not use to this kind of therapy, the Internet should be a very good resort to find ways how to find ways to treat this kind of illness. It could be a little awkward to find some other people who are experiencing depression, but there is the possibility that there are others out there that can relate.</p>
<p>3. It is advisable for the individual to write what he feels at the moment. If there are no friends to tell what the problems are, he may try writing about the feeling so that the hatred or sadness will subside. Holding the feeling can just add more depression.</p>
<p>4. Meditation can be a good tool to overcome the depression. Deep breathing and good relaxation can relieve anxiety and pressure that may lead to depression.</p>

<p>One thing is for sure, we will never hear the end of calamities that are likely to beset us, whether from disease or some other form of challenge we may face. It seems inevitable that there will always be ?something? that will get our blood pressure soaring.</p>
<p>So, what is the answer to this problem? How can we carry-on with our lives without being constantly afraid of what lies around the next corner? Here are several suggestions about how to effectively deal with life?s challenging situations:</p>
<p>1) Seek interpersonal support</p>
<p>People need other people, and there are many good and practical ways to relieve stress and anxiety. Exercise, good nutrition and positive thinking are great antidotes. These not only help relieve the angst; they actually give us a sense of empowerment over our lives.</p>
<p>2) Seek spiritual guidance about spoken words</p>
<p>The Bible tells us that the power of life and death are in the tongue. Words can both bless and curse (James 3). Negative words can evoke fear, anxiety and actually produce negative effects in a person?s life.</p>
<p>Whenever a word is heard &#8211; any word &#8211; the mind paints a picture of it. For instance, when someone says &#8220;black cow&#8221; immediately you will see that cow in your mind&#8217;s eye. Although words are not tangible, they have the power to bring about emotional and physical change! Remember &#8211; The Bible teaches that the earth was created by the Word of God! Now that&#8217;s real word power!</p>
<p>We all have a choice when it comes to listening and what we hear. We can choose to empower ourselves by listening to positive words and encouraging thoughts or we can do otherwise. Think about the last time you listening to some of your favorite music?Did your feet start tapping? Did you start to hum the melody? Didn?t your mood lighten-up a bit as a result of hearing the melody and the words? Negative words almost always produce negative results, whether seen or unseen. On the other hand, positive words instill a sense of well-being. A mere smile and a quick, happy-sounding, &#8220;Have a great day!&#8221; can instantly produce good feelings and joy.</p>
<p>3) Develop a ?thankful? attitude.</p>
<p>Thankfulness is one of the greatest virtues. A wise man once said that if we divided a page in two and wrote all our setbacks on one side and all our blessings on the other, we would find that the blessings far outweigh the negatives. The Bible teaches us to give thanks with a grateful heart for all things. Don&#8217;t look back on past hurts, nor fret about tomorrow. Live ?today? to the fullest?choose joy and thankfulness.</p>
<p>In conclusion, remember that our thoughts respond to what we feed the mind through our senses. Therefore, it naturally follows that happiness is a choice. This may be a foreign concept to many of us at first, but when applied, the results can be truly amazing! Break the habit of feeling trapped in a world of negative thoughts and decide to switch-on the power of positive thoughts, today.</p>

I have suffered from depression for as long as I can remember. My earliest childhood memories are tainted with the ominous presence of my illness despite growing up in a very loving home with two kinds and nurturing parents. After a divorce in my early thirties, I found myself unable to cope with the feelings of sadness that had permeated my existence and often left me unable to get out of bed. Of course, these feelings had intensified as a result of my divorce, but even well before I knew that something wasn&#8217;t quite right. I went to see a psychologist and my doctor, both of whom asked me when my symptoms started. I explained that I was fairly certain they started the day I was born, which both told me was entirely possible. Since that time, I have tried a variety of medications. From SSRI&#8217;s to MAO inhibitors, I have tried so many medications that I sometimes felt like a guinea pig. I finally found a medication that worked for me and produced very few noticeable side effects. I am now enjoying life more than I ever have and can honestly say that I feel like I never thought I would or even could.</p>
<p>Enjoying my life now is somewhat bittersweet as I look back over all the years that I spent in depression without even knowing that it wasn&#8217;t natural. I knew something was different simply from watching the behavior of others and comparing it to myself, but I always considered it to be my personality or &#8220;just the way I am&#8221;. I want to encourage others who experience extended bouts of sadness to get more information about depression. There are several resources available on the web, and even your primary care physician can be of great assistance in helping you to determine if you suffer from depression. He or she may recommend that you speak to a specialist.</p>
<p>Had I known that my problem was correctable, I would have spent many more years enjoying my life instead of wondering why everyone else was enjoying theirs. Depression is treatable, and you too can enjoy a happy, productive life.</p>

Since my early twenties, I have suffered from bipolar disorder. I am now in my mid-forties and have managed to keep it under control through the use of medications as well as the support of my friends, family and my wonderful and compassionate husband. Unfortunately, it took a long time to get to the point I am at now. For many years, I suffered through the challenges of trying to lead a productive and functional life despite being plagued by the imbalances brought on by my condition. During this time, I was unable to seek proper <em>treatment</em> because I was unaware that I had bipolar disorder. I had been diagnosed with depression by more than one doctor and the medications I was given did little to help my overall condition. My periods of depression were followed by brief stretches of manic behavior, some more intense than others. I always assumed these were the ups and downs of life. During my periods of depression, which also varied in length and intensity, I often found it difficult to go to work. I was unable to concentrate as the feelings of despair were so overwhelming at times that on some days I never made it out of bed. During my manic times, I often felt that anything was possible.<br />
While my outlook was positive during these episodes, I was often irritable and hard to deal with. My euphoria was sometimes followed by periods of normalcy, though I would eventually slip back into depression. During a particularly long battle with depression for which I had to be hospitalized, I was finally properly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Just being aware of what had been taking place inside of me helped me to understand some of the problems I was experiencing. I was placed on a series of medications designed to manage my condition and through counseling, learned to anticipate the onset of episodes and maintain rational thinking throughout. Although I must constantly be aware of my condition, I now lead a functional and satisfying life which I enjoy. Thankfully, today there are many sources of information on bipolar disorder and the medical community is much more cognizant of it&#8217;s existence. If you are experiencing some of the symptoms I have described, I urge you to seek more information and to tell your physician about your concerns. Know that if you do suffer from bipolar disorder, you can get your life back on track through the treatment options available today. My thoughts and prayers are with you.</p>

<p>The manic phase of Bipolar I Disorder is often misdiagnosed as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).</p>
<p>Bipolar patients in the manic phase exhibit many of the signs and symptoms of pathological narcissism &#8211; hyperactivity, self-centeredness, lack of empathy, and control freakery. During this recurring chapter of the disease, the patient is euphoric, has grandiose fantasies, spins unrealistic schemes, and has frequent rage attacks (is irritable) if her or his wishes and plans are (inevitably) frustrated.</p>
<p>The manic phases of the bipolar disorder, however, are limited in time &#8211; NPD is not. Furthermore, the mania is followed by &#8211; usually protracted &#8211; depressive episodes. The narcissist is also frequently dysphoric. But whereas the bipolar sinks into deep self-deprecation, self-devaluation, unbounded pessimism, all-pervasive guilt and anhedonia &#8211; the narcissist, even when depressed, never forgoes his narcissism: his grandiosity, sense of entitlement, haughtiness, and lack of empathy.</p>
<p>Narcissistic dysphorias are much shorter and reactive &#8211; they constitute a response to the Grandiosity Gap. In plain words, the narcissist is dejected when confronted with the abyss between his inflated self-image and grandiose fantasies &#8211; and the drab reality of his life: his failures, lack of accomplishments, disintegrating interpersonal relationships, and low status. Yet, one dose of Narcissistic Supply is enough to elevate the narcissists from the depth of misery to the heights of manic euphoria.</p>
<p>Not so with the bipolar. The source of her or his mood swings is assumed to be brain biochemistry &#8211; not the availability of Narcissistic Supply. Whereas the narcissist is in full control of his faculties, even when maximally agitated, the bipolar often feels that s/he has lost control of his/her brain (&#8220;flight of ideas&#8221;), his/her speech, his/her attention span (distractibility), and his/her motor functions.</p>
<p>The bipolar is prone to reckless behaviors and substance abuse only during the manic phase. The narcissist does drugs, drinks, gambles, shops on credit, indulges in unsafe sex or in other compulsive behaviors both when elated and when deflated.</p>
<p>As a rule, the bipolar&#8217;s manic phase interferes with his/her social and occupational functioning. Many narcissists, in contrast, reach the highest rungs of their community, church, firm, or voluntary organization. Most of the time, they function flawlessly &#8211; though the inevitable blowups and the grating extortion of Narcissistic Supply usually put an end to the narcissist&#8217;s career and social liaisons.</p>
<p>The manic phase of bipolar sometimes requires hospitalization and &#8211; more frequently than admitted &#8211; involves psychotic features. Narcissists are never hospitalized as the risk for self-harm is minute. Moreover, psychotic microepisodes in narcissism are decompensatory in nature and appear only under unendurable stress (e.g., in intensive therapy).</p>
<p>The bipolar&#8217;s mania provokes discomfort in both strangers and in the patient&#8217;s nearest and dearest. His/her constant cheer and compulsive insistence on interpersonal, sexual, and occupational, or professional interactions engenders unease and repulsion. Her/his lability of mood &#8211; rapid shifts between uncontrollable rage and unnatural good spirits &#8211; is downright intimidating. The narcissist&#8217;s gregariousness, by comparison, is calculated, &#8220;cold&#8221;, controlled, and goal-orientated (the extraction of Narcissistic Supply). His cycles of mood and affect are far less pronounced and less rapid.</p>
<p>The bipolar&#8217;s swollen self-esteem, overstated self-confidence, obvious grandiosity, and delusional fantasies are akin to the narcissist&#8217;s and are the source of the diagnostic confusion. Both types of patients purport to give advice, carry out an assignment, accomplish a mission, or embark on an enterprise for which they are uniquely unqualified and lack the talents, skills, knowledge, or experience required.</p>
<p>But the bipolar&#8217;s bombast is far more delusional than the narcissist&#8217;s. Ideas of reference and magical thinking are common and, in this sense, the bipolar is closer to the schizotypal than to the narcissistic.</p>
<p>There are other differentiating symptoms:</p>
<p>Sleep disorders &#8211; notably acute insomnia &#8211; are common in the manic phase of bipolar and uncommon in narcissism. So is &#8220;manic speech&#8221; &#8211; pressured, uninterruptible, loud, rapid, dramatic (includes singing and humorous asides), sometimes incomprehensible, incoherent, chaotic, and lasts for hours. It reflects the bipolar&#8217;s inner turmoil and his/her inability to control his/her racing and kaleidoscopic thoughts.</p>
<p>As opposed to narcissists, bipolar in the manic phase are often distracted by the slightest stimuli, are unable to focus on relevant data, or to maintain the thread of conversation. They are &#8220;all over the place&#8221; &#8211; simultaneously initiating numerous business ventures, joining a myriad organization, writing umpteen letters, contacting hundreds of friends and perfect strangers, acting in a domineering, demanding, and intrusive manner, totally disregarding the needs and emotions of the unfortunate recipients of their unwanted attentions. They rarely follow up on their projects.</p>
<p>The transformation is so marked that the bipolar is often described by his/her closest as &#8220;not himself/herself&#8221;. Indeed, some bipolars relocate, change name and appearance, and lose contact with their &#8220;former life&#8221;. Antisocial or even criminal behavior is not uncommon and aggression is marked, directed at both others (assault) and oneself (suicide). Some biploars describe an acuteness of the senses, akin to experiences recounted by drug users: smells, sounds, and sights are accentuated and attain an unearthly quality.</p>
<p>As opposed to narcissists, bipolars regret their misdeeds following the manic phase and try to atone for their actions. They realize and accept that &#8220;something is wrong with them&#8221; and seek <strong>help</strong>. During the depressive phase they are ego-dystonic and their defenses are autoplastic (they blame themselves for their defeats, failures, and mishaps).</p>
<p>Finally, pathological narcissism is already discernible in early adolescence. The full-fledged bipolar disorder &#8211; including a manic phase &#8211; rarely occurs before the age of 20. The narcissist is consistent in his pathology &#8211; not so the bipolar. The onset of the manic episode is fast and furious and results in a conspicuous metamorphosis of the patient.</p>

<p>There?s an old adage about how ?music sooths the savage beast.? Not only is this true, it is actually an understatement. Music plays such a profound part of our lives, that we will barely scratch the surface here, but let?s give it an overview.</p>
<p>All of us grew up with certain songs or instrumentals that strike a chord that reverberates through our entire being. For example, when I hear ?A Summer Place,? it immediately carries me back to summer months in the fifties. The experience is so profound that I can remember the feel of the sun on my face, the smell of hot dogs cooked over an open fire and the laughter of friends and family.</p>
<p>There is a theory that certain notes or chords resonate with a vibration that is particularly harmonious to specific people. Have you ever heard a song that gave you ?goose bumps?? If so, then you give validation to this theory. When this occurs, the music has a profound affect on the subconscious. Add intense emotion to the equation and you have one powerful, indelible, blueprint on your subconscious that will follow you the rest of your life.</p>
<p>For example, let?s say that you receive news of the death of a loved one while a specific piece of music is playing on the radio. That particular music may have a lasting impression. Years later, for no apparent reason, you may find yourself immediately thrown into a state of <span style="text-decoration: underline;">depression</span> upon hearing that same tune. The same can be true of ?positive? feelings as described in the story above.</p>
<p>The subliminal effect of music is a proven fact. How often do you find yourself humming a fragment of a tune that you can?t identify only to discover that it?s a new ?commercial? message you heard on your television. The advertising industry pays huge amounts of money to conduct research into why and how music works on the subconscious mind. This is also the reason why you see the recent trend by large companies to reconstitute classics originally performed by some of the greats of stage and screen.</p>
<p>Just for fun, the next time you find yourself humming a tune, try and remember when, where and under what circumstances you heard it for the very first time. The exercise will probably <em>help</em> you to better understand how past events have shaped your musical preferences. And, I?ll wager that the next time you hear ?A Summer Place,? you will remember reading this article.</p>
